The CSIR in collaboration with Mandela Mining Precinct has Eight Internship opportunities. The successful incumbents will support the Mandela Mining in both an administrative, research and assisting with administrative tasks related to research, project delivery and implementation.
The interns will be placed in the mining, geoscience, information technology and social sciences areas for the next eighteen months. These positions are based in Johannesburg.

Mining Engineering (Four Positions)
Key responsibilities:
- Literature review of previous research done locally and internationally in the areas mentioned above;
- Undertake time and motion studies on identified mining engineering technologies at various mine sites
- Engage with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on technologies related to the above areas at various mine sites
- Report on processes and results;
- Attend and present on results where required;
- Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leaders.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor degree in mining engineering;
- Post graduate qualification will be an added advantage;
- Experience in metalliferous mining environment will be an added advantage;
- Mechanised mining environment would be an added advantage;
- Medical fitness certificate declaring fitness to perform underground duties;
- Drivers Licence;
- Proficient in Microsoft suite of programmes;
- Good numerical skills.
Social Sciences for Mining (One Position)
Key responsibilities:
- Literature reviews on the impact of Technology and People for underground (local and international) mining environments or contexts, as aligned to the programme;
- Undertake data gathering, time and motion studies on identified mine sites and local communities for deeper understanding around impacts on people in the sector;
- Engage with researchers and stakeholders involved in modernisation projects;
- Conduct research work or tasks related to people and technologies, as assigned by project leads or programme manager;
- Report writing on processes and results;
- Present results or research work, when required;
- Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leads or programme managers;
- Maintain a development (HCD) Plan.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- An Honours degree in Social Sciences;
- A Master’s degree will be an added advantage;
- Inter and intra dependencies and between people, systems and technology;
- Drivers Licence;
- Proficient in Microsoft suite of programmes;
- Good numerical skills;
- Attention to detail;
- Good communication skills;
- Advantageous: Administrative skills – minute taking, filing, etc ;
- No criminal record.
ICT (One Position)
Key responsibilities:
- Literature review of previous research done locally and internationally on Real Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) for underground mining environments as aligned to the programme;
- Undertake time and motion studies on identified RTIMS techniques and technologies at various mine sites;
- Engage with suppliers and manufacturers of RTIMS technologies related to the above at various mine sites;
- Report on processes and results;
- Attend and present on results where required;
- Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leaders
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor degree in Computer Science;
- Post graduate qualification will be an added advantage;
- Drivers Licence;
- Proficient in Microsoft suite of programmes;
- Good numerical skills;
- Attention to detail.
Geology and Geophysics (Two Positions)
Key responsibilities:
- Literature review of previous research done locally and internationally on geology and geophysics applications aligned to the programme
- Undertake time and motion studies on identified geophysics techniques and technologies at various mine sites
- Engage with suppliers and manufacturers of geological and geophysics technologies related to the above areas at various mine sites
- Report on processes and results;
- Attend and present on results where required;
- Perform general administrative tasks as required by project leaders.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- BSc. Honours degree in Geology or Geophysics;
- Post graduate qualification will be an added advantage;
- Metalliferous and mechanised mining environment will be an added advantage;
- Drivers Licence;
- Medical fitness certificate declaring fitness to perform underground duties.
